It's like forgetting to read the fine print or not minding the nutritional table on the containers, it turns out.

A post from The News Nerd got a lot of attention, when it discussed NBA legend, Allen Iverson's alleged money problems. The questionable quote, "I don't even have money for a cheeseburger," supposedly from Iverson, was enough to make the story go viral.

"Troubled former NBA basketball player Allen Iverson was seen begging for change outside of Lenox Mall in Atlanta. Several mall patrons reported a man with a disheveled appearance harassing them for change," the article read. "When security arrived, they were shocked to see it was none other than basketball legend Allen Iverson. Iverson was asked to leave the premises by mall security."

It even quoted a certain "Jason Seaworth."

"One of the hardest things I've ever had to do was asking my hero to leave the mall. It was very sad to see him in such a bad place. I really hope he gets his life together and somehow return to prominence," the fictional person was quoted as saying.

"Over his NBA career, Iverson made over $154.5 million in salary. The 39-year-old also racked up quite a bit of income in endorsements, bringing his income to over $200 million," the piece said, adding that he wasted his money on jewelry, cars and other expenses.

It turns out that the article saying that the ex-Philadelphia 76ers great was spotted "begging for change outside [of] Atlanta's Lenox Mall" is a fraud, The Epoch Times said. Also, the site was satirical, and the disclaimer said that it "doesn't post real news and shouldn't be taken seriously."

There's a note at the bottom of each page, too, which reads: "The stories posted on The News Nerd are for entertainment purposes only. The stories may mimic articles found in the headlines, but rest assured they are purely satirical."

That's sad news for all the 39,000 Facebook users who've shared it.

Inquisitr agreed that the former Philadelphia 76ers All-Star never had the same fortune since his exit from the most popular league in the world. Iverson did lose his $4.5-million Atlanta home to foreclosure last year, and creditors and attorneys are after him, it added, but to kill that rumor once and for all, it said, "Allen Iverson, maybe feeling emotional. Not broke, though."

The News Nerd is "like The Onion but less funny," the Inquisitr observed.

It cited an Instagram post by bellamilagroserrano where Iverson can be seen, "rocking crisp clothes and probably an average American salary's worth of gold chains. No, Iverson's not begging for cash here."

Iverson reportedly receives $1 million annually from a fund and will also access his NBA pension of $8,000 per month in five years.
