For her new album, Grammy-winning Beninese vocalist Angelique Kidjo collaborated with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, which brought a lush, classical feel to her African standards. Billboard is excited to give an exclusive first look at a live video of that team-up. Check out the video below, as Kidjo belts "Malaika" with the orchestra behind her: "'Malaika' is the favorite song of my mother," Kidjo tells Billboard. "When I was nine I discovered the magical voice of Miriam Makeba who originally sung it. Since that day I've sung it at everyone of my concerts. It is a beautiful marriage proposal in Swahili from a poor man to his lover, asking her, in the name of love, to marry him regardless of class and wealth. Singing this song with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra was such a precious moment for me. It made the old melody shine in a new emotional light." Kidjo is a worldwide star who has topped Billboard's World Music chart, been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and collaborated with the likes of Philip Glass, Carlos Santana, and Alicia Keys in over three decades in music. Angelique Kidjo Sings with the Orchestre Philharmonique drops March 31 via 429 Records. Pre-orders are available here.
