Blues legend BB King has been rushed to hospital with diabetes-related dehydration.

The 89-year-old, considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, was admitted to a hospital near his Las Vegas home over the weekend and remains there.

His daughter Claudette informed the Los Angeles Times that BB was suffering dehydration related to Type II diabetes, a condition he has lived with for two decades, but that now he "is much better."

The King of Blues has spent more than 65 years on the road as a musician, playing more than 300 gigs a year at his peak and releasing an incredible 43 studio albums.

That prolific output has slowed to around 100 annual shows in the last decade, with his last album One Kind Favor appearing in 2008.

Last year there were signs that his medical condition and age were catching up with him when he became ill at Chicago's House of Blues in October.

He cancelled his final eight dates of 2014.
